Course Content
The Starter for Ten is a parenting programme designed to promote preschool children’s school readiness and support parents/guardians in helping their children learn and develop. At the end of the programme children will have successfully completed the 10-step checklist to help prepare them for starting school.
This course is delivered through resources and support given through email and not an online face to face session. This will give you flexibility while having young children at home and the opportunity to learn at a time that is suitable for you.
This course is suitable for families whose children are due to start or have just started primary school.
You will require access to the internet and an email address to receive your resources throughout the programme.
Your tutor will give you written feedback through email with guidance on how to continuously develop and improve your skills. You will be required to respond to your teacher to update them on how you have completed tasks set on a weekly basis. If preferred you could also speak with your tutor directly over Skype/Microsoft Teams. Your tutor will support you with this.
You will have achieved greater knowledge on how to prepare your child for their transition to school and as a reward for your child's participation in the programme, they will receive their very own puppet and certificate of achievement.
There are other Family Learning courses which may interest you including understanding your child's mental health and supporting your children with their schoolwork.

Helping you financially

  • We can offer financial support relating to childcare costs, travel costs, course fees, books etc. (T&C apply).
  • You can pay for your course in instalments (over £100). Please ask for details.
  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2023).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
