Do you want a job or an apprenticeship but know you need the opportunity to develop the skills, experience and confidence that employers are looking for in the workplace? A traineeship could be the route you are looking for. It offers a programme of meaningful learning and work based training to build these skills and give you the best chance of finding sustained employment, an apprenticeship or progressing to further learning.

Your programme will be developed and agreed with the team at NYCC and the employer offering the work experience. It will included learning skills essential to your training placement but you will also be focussing on equally important skills like planning, timekeeping and teamwork.

A traineeship can last between six weeks and twelve months depending on your needs. Many people complete within six months. You will be able to progress as soon as possible but you may benefit from a longer period of training and work experience and the people supporting you on the programme will agree this with you.
If you are aged between19-24 or 25 if you have an Education and Health Care Plan and are qualified at level 3 or below, you can apply for a traineeship. You must be available to commit to 30-35 hours a week of learning and work experience and be able to work from home and travel to a work location if required.

You will be invited for an interview to discuss your skills levels, explore which areas of work interest you and help you to decide if a traineeship is for you. Trainees will be interacting with teachers and employers in real-time, attend meetings and contribute to discussions related to the work so good digital skills are very important. If you have skills gaps in maths, English and IT, we can build additional study into the programme or your adviser may suggest that you start a traineeship later to allow you time to improve your skills in these subjects.
You will need access to a laptop and a reliable internet connection. You may be in the workplace for your work experience but you will follow other training online even when the government and NYCC guidelines tell us that we can go back into the workplace.
You will use the learning platform One file to send and receive work as part of the project. Your tutor will assess your work and give you on-going feedback on your progress. There will also be many opportunities to meet with your tutors online for verbal feedback as part of a group of in 1:1 tutorials. You will also work independently on online resources. These will help you to develop the knowledge and skills you need for a range of occupations
Throughout the programme, you will have been working on your CV and will be able to describe your skills in an application form and at interview with confidence. This will increase your chances of progressing into work, an apprenticeship or further learning.
Your adviser will continue to contact you to discuss further training and/or employment success and progression.
