Course Content
The course will provide an accredited qualification for those who are interested in working in an accounts environment or those looking for a qualification.
By the end of the course students will be able to:
• List the role of the Book Keeper
• Give recommendations for keeping data safe
• Complete a cash book
• Process invoices and credit notes
• Complete a bank reconciliation
• Produce a petty cash book
• Complete simple double entry T accounts
This course is suitable for those with no accounts knowledge who are going self-employed or looking to retrain for an accounting/bookkeeping role. The course will be classroom based.

Additional Information
To complete this qualification, learners must register with AAT in order to sit the assessment and receive access to study support resources via their My AAT account. This will be done in class and will give access to the AAT website for a 12-month period. Learners will not be registering for AAT student membership.

Learners who have a criminal record, been bankrupted or have a CCJ (County Court Judgement) will need to confirm with AAT their eligibility to complete the qualification before progressing. Please note it is the learner’s responsibility to check eligibility.


This course is for anyone aged 19 or over living in North Yorkshire with a valid Post Code.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential. You must have completed the Introduction to Bookkeeping course.
You will need access to a Laptop.
This course will be delivered online using Skype / Teams. You will need access to the internet and an Email account. Your teacher will contact you via Skype/ Teams/ Email, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions across the County. You may be given tasks to complete at each session and online demonstrations.
Practice questions and assessments are completed at home and in class. The AAT Level 1 Access Award in Bookkeeping consists of one unit, which is assessed online. (Due to Covid restrictions the only assessment centre currently available is in Ripon).
On passing the exam, you will gain the AAT Level 1 Access Award in Bookkeeping.
AAT Level 2 Foundation Award in Bookkeeping or Foundation Certificate in Accounting.

  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
