Course Content
Have you ever looked back at life and thought ‘this would make a great book or a film?’ What advice would you give to the 16 year old you? What experiences would you like to share with future generations? This course will provide you with an introduction to a range of forms and genres including letters to yourself, short stories, autobiographies and memoirs. You will read examples and discuss writing techniques to build your individual style.
During the course you will learn about:

• Creative ideas and planning techniques
• Personal style, setting and plot development
• Tips on creating powerful imagery and mood in your writing

This course is delivered for up to 15 hours in weekly sessions. At the end of the course, students will have created several short pieces of work or a larger, ongoing piece of work in progress.
To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2021

You can attend this course if you live in any area in the UK

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.
You will need to commit to attending sessions regularly and completing some aspect of self-study
You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please also have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work. You may wish to use a memory stick.
This course is delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Zoom, email and our online learning platform, Moodle. You will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other like-minded people across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session along with instructions and online demonstrations
This course is not formally assessed although you will be given verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course.
You will receive a certificate of completion following full attendance
You will be given the opportunity to discuss progression to advanced creative writing courses or those which lead to English qualifications

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
