Course Content

If you haven’t used a sewing machine before, this course is for you. You will learn how to thread, alter tensions and use basic key functions on your sewing machine. You will also develop basic sewing processes and techniques to feel more confident using your own sewing machine for small projects.

Open Entry Requirements


This course is for anyone aged 19 or over. Basic IT skills are essential for access to online learning and access to emails.

Open What Will I Need?


This course will be delivered online. You will need use of a laptop, Tablet or Smartphone and access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through email and Teams.

You will need a working sewing machine, thread and pieces of material to use for practising processes and techniques.

Open Assessment Methods


Your tutor will give you verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course, with tips on how to improve your technique and continue to develop your skills.

Open What Will I Achieve?


You will receive an Adult Learning Certificate of Achievement after successfully completing the course.

Open Progression


We have follow on courses such as developing sewing machine skills, dressmaking, home textiles or creative textiles.

  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2023).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
