Course Content

This is a 5-week course for learners to develop patchwork and quilting skills. You will be taught how to cut and piece half square triangles (HST), quarter square triangles (QST), Flying Geese blocks, improve quilting and try out Foundation Paper Piecing techniques.

This is ideal for anyone with a basic knowledge of patchwork and quilting and who wants to learn more.

Open Entry Requirements


This course is for anyone aged 19 or over. The content is ideal for anyone with a basic knowledge of patchwork and quilting or who has already completed the beginners course.

Basic IT skills are essential for access to online learning and to emails.

Open What Will I Need?


This course is delivered online. You will need use of a laptop, Tablet or Smartphone and access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through email and Teams.

You will need fabrics (scrap fabrics or old clothes are also fine), scissors, ruler and a sewing machine (although hand sewing needle and thread can also be used). Quilting tools such as a rotary cutter, quilting ruler and cutting mat would also be ideal.

Open Assessment Methods


Your tutor will give you verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course, with tips on how to improve your technique and continue to develop your skills.

Open What Will I Achieve?


You will receive an ALSS certificate of achievement on successful completion of this course.

Open Progression


You could progress onto the 'Advanced traditional and modern patchwork' course. We add more courses throughout the year so keep checking our website for updates.

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
