This course will enable you to create a couple of pieces using the punch needle and rag rug methods. It will provide you with knowledge of a range of craft processes including design and construction, and by the end of the course you will feel confident in your use of the equipment.
Punch needle embroidery is much quicker than traditional embroidery, and unlike embroidery, there are no fiddly complicated stitches or small needles. Instead, you use a punch needle to create a series of loops and stitches on an open weave fabric. Together we will create designs and patterns and learn how to use the equipment effectively.
Rag rugging is a fabulously thrifty craft where old clothing and fabric scraps are cut up and woven through a hessian backing to create rugs and textile pieces for the home. It became widespread during the Industrial Revolution, however by the 1920’s the craft was dying out as it was associated with hard times. During World War 2 brought a brief revival and interest in the craft grew again in the 1980’s. Currently it is practiced by many who enjoy making things, each playing their part in keeping the tradition alive and modernising the patterns.
You will work towards producing punch needle, a hooky and a proggy/proddy series of samples. All of which will have had their function and design considered to suit your preferences. Samples can be used for cushion and stool covers, wall hangings or framed pieces, or can be turned into bags or another functional item of your choice.
