Course Content
The course will provide a simple hands-on introduction for those who are new to using a computer, accessing the Internet and basic text entry.
The course will help you to:
• Practice keyboard and mouse skills
• Create, store and retrieve a file
• Create a folder on the computer
• Get started with Emails
• Recognise common computer terminology
• Improve computer safety and security
• Identify symbols and icons on screen
• Recognise computer hardware and software
• Use video conferencing for learning (remote course only)
During the course, you will work on activities set by your teacher in a socially distanced computer room. Further details of the Covid compliant access and required actions to ensure everyone’s safety, will be sent to you prior to the course start.

There are no IT entry requirements; this course is suitable for those who are new to using IT.
To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2021 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
We also offer real time online delivery of this course, on various days and times which may suit if you have access to a computer, the internet and Email and wish to study from home on your own computer.
Notepad, pen or pencil and a folder to keep your work in.

Your teacher will give you regular exercises to practise your skills and strengthen your understanding, provide feedback on your progress and show you how to develop your skills further.
This is a non accredited First Steps course, which will build your confidence to progress to Next Steps with Computers

  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
