Course Content

This course will give you the skills and confidence to develop applique design ideas and practical samples, which will lead onto creating or customising a piece of clothing, cushion or homeware item. Over the course you will learn key techniques and terminology, construction processes; producing samples using the sewing machine and / or by hand. Applique is an exciting design technique that can incorporate the use of recycled fabrics or remnants in the development of unique visual outcomes or personalised items.

This course is for anyone aged 19 or over. Previous experience of using a sewing machine for basic stitching is required.

This course is delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis on Teams, an online video platform and by e-mail. Don’t worry if you are not confident with logging onto a Teams meeting, your teacher will help you to get started. For this course, you will need a working sewing machine, thread and pieces of material to use for practising processes and techniques. You will also require Bondaweb, an iron, hand sewing needles, embroidery thread and other embellishments for your individual item. Your teacher will discuss individual projects at the beginning of the course.

Your tutor will give you verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course, with hints and tips on how to improve your technique and continue to develop your skills

You will receive an Adult Learning Certificate of Achievement after successfully completing the course.

We have follow on courses such as developing Dressmaking skills, Home textiles or Creative Textiles.

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
