Course Content

The course will provide a simple hands-on progression from the Introduction to Computers course and an introduction for those who are new to accessing the Internet and using an email system.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Use vocabulary relevant to the Internet and email.
• Search for information using the Internet
• Access the Internet for a range of activities, such as shopping, social networking and tv/radio
• Compose, send, open and reply to an email
• Take steps to use online services safely and securely
You will work individually and in small/classroom groups, undertaking tutor led exercises designed for the complete beginner.


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2021 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
This course is suitable for those who have progressed from the First or Next Steps in omputersthe Introduction to Computers course and for those who wish to develop their confidence in Digital Skills. Some familiarity with a keyboard and a mouse/touchpad is required.

Notepad, pen or pencil and a folder to keep your work in.

Your teacher will give you regular exercises to practise your skills and strengthen your understanding, provide feedback on your progress and show you how to develop your skills further.

The confidence to use a computer to send and receive emails, access the Internet for a variety of uses and know what simple steps to take to stay safe online. You will also complete evidence of learning progress with your teacher.

On successful completion of this course, you could progress to the entry level 3 Award in Digital Skills

  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
