Course Content
Learning in the local community has changed the lives of many adults across North Yorkshire and you could be one of them!

Research shows that learning throughout adulthood and into later life encourages important social interaction, gives a sense of hope and purpose and helps cope with stress, all of which has a positive impact on maintaining and improving our mental health and wellbeing.

This course will help you to build your skills and knowledge of a range of complex forms and genres including prose, short stories, autobiographies, memoirs and poetry. You will read examples and discuss writing techniques to build your individual style.

During the course you will learn about:
• Complex Plotting strategies and introducing world view
• Showing feelings, creating tone and atmosphere
• Writers’ choices and techniques

This course is delivered for up to 30 hours in weekly sessions. At the end of this course students should have Writer’s Journal and several pieces completed - collection of poetry, short stories or chapters in larger, ongoing piece of work in progress.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2021

You can attend this course if you live in any area in the UK that is not devolved

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.

You will need to commit to attending sessions regularly and completing some aspect of self-study

You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please also have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work. You may wish to use a memory stick.

This course is delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Zoom, email and our online learning platform, Moodle. You will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other like-minded people across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session along with instructions and online demonstrations

This course is not formally assessed although you will be given verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course.

You will receive a certificate of completion following full attendance

You will be given the opportunity to discuss progression to further English based courses or those which lead to English qualifications.

  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2023).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
