Course Content
The course will provide a simple hands-on progression from the First Steps with Computers course and aims to develop your skills and confidence.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Use skills for learning online
• Create, edit and save a file
• Use text entry skills
• Use vocabulary relevant to the Internet and email
• Search for information using the Internet
• Take steps to use online services safely and securely
• Create an online account
• Access the Internet for a range of activities, such as shopping, social networking and tv/radio
• Forward email messages and deal with attached files
This course is for anyone aged 19 or over, who lives in North Yorkshire.
It is suitable for those who have completed the Introduction to Computers course and for those who wish to develop their confidence with technology. Some familiarity with a keyboard and a mouse/touchpad is required.
We also offer real time online delivery of this course, on various days and times which may suit if you have access to a computer, the internet and Email and wish to study from home on your own computer.
You may wish to bring a notepad and pen for making notes and a memory stick for saving work.
Your teacher will give you exercises to practise your skills and strengthen your understanding, provide feedback on your progress and show you how to develop your skills further.
The confidence to use a computer to send and receive emails, access the Internet for a variety of uses and know what simple steps to take to stay safe online. You will also complete evidence of learning progress with your teacher.
Your teacher will discuss progression options and these may include Functional ICT, Essentials Digital Skills, or the ECDL / ICDL.

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
