Course Content

The AAT Access Award in Business Skills offers students at Level 1 the opportunity to develop key practical skills used in every business as a route into employment. On completion of this qualification, students will also be equipped with a strong foundation from which to progress to further study with AAT in either accountancy or bookkeeping if they would like to do so.
By the end of the course you will be able to:

• List different business sectors (retail, service, and charity),
• List different types of organisations (sole trader, partnerships, and limited companies)
• Know how different organisations are structured.
• Identify suitable jobs and create a CV
• Understand working with others, time management, professional behaviour, workplace communication methods & data confidentiality.
• Understand decimals, fractions, percentages & ratios.
• Provide business documents for accounts


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2021 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential. You must have completed the Introduction to Business Skills course.


You will need access to a Laptop.
This course will be delivered online using Teams. You will need access to the internet and an Email account. Your teacher will contact you via Teams/ Email, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions across the County. You may be given tasks to complete at each session and online demonstrations.


Practice questions and assessments are completed at home and in class. The AAT Level 1 Access Award in Business Skills consists of one unit, which is assessed online. (Due to Covid restrictions the only assessment centres currently available are Ripon and Scarborough).


On passing an online AAT assessment you will gain the AAT Level 1 Access Award in Business Skills
Currently we have access to assessment centres in Ripon and Scarborough.

Skillsfirst Level 2 Certificate in Computerised Payroll for Business (Sage).
AAT Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping
AAT Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting
Skillsfirst Level 3 Diploma in Computerised Accounts for Business (Sage).

  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
