Course Content

The GCSE English language course will support you to read, understand and analyse the written word as well as to write clearly and coherently. This can open doors to further high level qualifications along with widening the scope of job opportunities.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Demonstrate effective communication skills in different situations
• Demonstrate sound reading and writing skills which will include writing a range of texts: a creative writing piece, an article giving your own point of view.
• Develop an understanding and the skills to analyse how language is used.
This course is delivered over 30 weeks, with an introduction for the first 5 weeks used for extended assessment.
Most of our GCSE provision is online, however, if you would prefer face to face learning we may be able to help you.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2022 and not be an apprentice. Further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check this at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.
We will ask you to provide evidence of qualifications you have achieved. If you cannot provide the evidence, we will ask you to undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment to ensure that you are at the appropriate level.
You will need to complete a 5 week Pre GCSE course as part of the overall course. This will allow you to discuss elements of the curriculum with the teacher and enable further assessment of your skills
You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete a minumum of 3 hours self study each week

You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please bring a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work. You may wish to use a memory stick.
This course will be delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through email, Zoom and Moodle and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session and instructions and online demonstrations. Some paper resources and study books may be sent to you to support
you to study.

Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.
The course comprises of two paper based examinations which will take place in June 2023. There is also a speaking and listening activity which must be completed to achieve the qualification.

You will achieve an AQA GCSE 9 – 1 grade in English, following successful completion

Other courses related to personal or professional development.
GCSE English Language can be used to access a wide range of further and higher education provision.

This is the Initial Assessment that all learners must enrol on in the first instance, prior to becoming Approved Learners.

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
