Course Content

This course will provide an opportunity to read and interpret a range of short stories from a range of cultures and look at the writing techniques and language used. You will discuss characters, plot and writing style to support an appreciation of reading and an interest in writing styles and techniques

During the course you will:
• Read a range of short fictional stories
• Discuss your interpretations and preferences
• Take part in fun group activities

This course is delivered for up to 12 hours in 6 weekly sessions


No previous qualification is required. You will need to commit to attending sessions regularly and completing a higher level of self-study.
Basic IT skills are essential
Please bring a pen, small note book and a dictionary. The books will be sent out before the first session
You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please also have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work.

This course is delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Zoom, email and our online learning platform, Moodle. You will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other like-minded people across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session along with instructions and online demonstrations

This course is not formally assessed although you will be given verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course.

You will receive a certificate of completion following full attendance

You will be given the opportunity to discuss progression courses which lead to English qualifications

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
