Course Content

The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care prepares learners to work with children between birth and 5 years, with knowledge of children up to 7 years.

All candidates are required to hold a full Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS).

All learners on accredited courses are required to complete an Awarding Body Accreditation form; you must provide photographic proof of ID. Please bring photographic proof of ID – passport or driving licence to the first session.


You should ideally hold a level 2 Functional skills in English and Maths and be able to use a computer.

Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on a practical placement as an important part of the assessment process involves evaluating skills in real working situations. 250 placement hours are recommended.

You will need access to a computer and build a portfolio of evidence.

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. Knowledge based outcomes can be assessed using non–mandatory assessment tasks provided for tutors’ convenience in this specification. Skills based outcomes must be achieved with reference to a real work environment and must include direct observation within the workplace.

The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care

This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to child care.   • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
