Course Content

The UK retail industry is one of the largest private sector employers, yet experiences a higher than average staff turnover at 17% across the sector.
With over 60 million customers making 320 million transactions per week, there is a constant need for workers with the knowledge and understanding to continue the success of the sector.
This qualification focusses on improving various skills and knowledge in order to create a career pathway within the retail industry.
This course is suitable for anyone looking to work, or currently working within the retail sector.
This course is split into eight manageable units including:
Understanding customer service in the retail sector,
How teamwork contributes to the effectiveness of a retail business,
Dealing with customers queries and complaints,
Understanding the control, receipt and storage of stock.

Our ‘Distance’ courses allow you to learn remotely without attending lessons in a classroom, which means you can study at your own pace, in your own home at a time that suits you with the freedom to revisit areas of the course as little or as much as you like. You will have the support of a specialist teacher who will mentor you during the course.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2022 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
You must have a good basic understanding of English, maths and IT.
You will be asked to complete a short assessment prior to this course starting to ensure it is right for you.

This course will be completed online; you will need access to a Laptop or Tablet with regular access to the internet and an email account.
You will receive a login for our learning platform where your resources will be stored, this will allow you to access them whenever you chose to study.

You will be allocated a specialist teacher who will support you with your learning. Support will be offered to you remotely via Microsoft Teams or email. You will receive regular developmental feedback from your teacher.
Your assessments will be completed online then reviewed by your teacher and our quality team.

Once all units have been completed and assessed, you will achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Retail Operations.

You have a range of progression routes available to you including: Team Leading, Lean Organisation Manaement Techniques, Accounts, Payroll, Digital Skills.

You must live in North Yorkshire and be eligible to be funded by NYCC based on your home postcode and meet the residency eligibilty requirements.

  • We can offer financial support relating to childcare costs, travel costs, course fees, books etc. (T&C apply).
  • You can pay for your course in instalments (over £100). Please ask for details.
  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2023).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
