Course Content

You will follow the AQA GCSE Mathematics syllabus.
You will gain confidence in recognising and using techniques to support your own maths development. You will learn how to solve problems and find solutions and how to apply these new skills within different situations. You will widen your knowledge of mathematics to include topics such as geometry, trigonometry and algebra
By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of mathematics and be able to recall and apply the skills you have learnt
• Solve problems by applying your skills to problems using calculator and non-calculator methods.
GCSE courses are all online.

Open Entry Requirements


You must not already have obtained Grade 4 (previously Grade C at GCSE) or above.
To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2022 and not be an apprentice. Further eligibility may be linked to where you live (you need to be a North Yorkshire resident) and we will check this at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.
We will ask you to enrol on a BKSB assessment session. This will allow us to allocate the most suitable course for your individual level. We will then provide details of all courses available and a learner agreement will be sent to you to confirm you would like to allocated a place.

You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete a minimum of 3 hours self- study and homework each week.

Open What Will I Need?


Please bring a notepad, calculator, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work. You may wish to use a memory stick. You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet for the online courses.
For these you will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through email, and an online channel and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions (online these will be across the County). You will be given tasks to complete at each session and instructions aswell as classroom/online demonstrations. Some paper resources and study books will be sent to you to support you.

Open Assessment Methods


Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course. You will be expected to complete assessed homework each week.
You will be required to complete one calculator and two non-calculator papers to achieve the GCSE Maths qualification at the end of the course.
You must be available to attend all 3 examinations in May and June 2023. Examination dates: pending - Please note the examination dates are non-negotiable.

Open What Will I Achieve?


An AQA GCSE Maths qualification at an appropriate grade 9-1 and an accredited functional skills level 2 qualification if you do not already have one.

  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
