Course Content

The aim of this qualification is to introduce you to bookkeeping.
You will develop skills and knowledge to manage books effectively. It includes manual double entry bookkeeping and associated documents and processes, up to Trial Balance.

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping covers two mandatory units:
• Bookkeeping Transactions
• Bookkeeping Controls
The purpose of this qualification is to ensure that students are well prepared to progress into a career in business, finance or professional accountancy, or into further education.

All of the units within the qualification are mandatory: Units are assessed individually via AAT end-of-unit assessments which must currently be completed at our AAT assessment centre in Ripon.

We offer a non centre assessed qualifictions in Business Accounting at level 1 and 2 which includes bookkeeping and Sage accounting. Please enquire for further details.


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2022 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
You will need to have completed the mandatory 2 weeks Introduction to Bookkeeping Level 2
You will be required to have a level 2 of literacy and numeracy, and be able to use a computer.


You will need access to a Laptop.
This course will be delivered online using Skype/Teams. You will need access to the internet and an Email account. Your teacher will contact you via Skype/ Teams/ Email, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions across the County.

All of the units within the qualification are mandatory: Units are assessed individually via AAT end-of-unit (Due to Covid restrictions the only assessment centre currently available is in Ripon).


Possible jobs after completing this qualification:
Accounts Administrator, Accounts Assistant, Accounts Payable Clerk, Bookkeeper, Trainee Accounts Technician.
Learners who have a criminal record, been bankrupted or have a CCJ (County Court Judgement) need to be aware that these may impact on AAT membership or future employment. Please note it is the learner’s responsibility to check with AAT.

  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
