Learning in the local community has changed the lives of many adults across North Yorkshire and you could be one of them!

Research shows that learning throughout adulthood and into later life encourages important social interaction, gives a sense of hope and purpose and helps cope with stress, all of which has a positive impact on maintaining and improving our mental health and wellbeing.

This course will provide an opportunity to develop your English skills at a higher level, with a focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar. This could be to support your employment opportunities, update your knowledge or support you to complete a Functional Skills qualification.
During the course you will:
• Show organisation features and discourse markers
• Use compound and complex sentences
• Identify punctuation correctly, including hyphens, colons and semi colons
• Spell difficult words appropriate to level 2

This course is delivered for up to 15 hours in weekly sessions.


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.
We will ask you to provide evidence of qualifications you have achieved. If you cannot provide the evidence, we will ask you to undertake an initial assessment to ensure that you are at the right level
You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.


You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please also have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work. You may wish to use a memory stick.
This course will be delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Zoom, email and Moodle and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session and instructions and online demonstrations


This course is not formally assessed although you will be given verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course.


You will receive a certificate of completion following full attendance


You will be given the opportunity to discuss progression to other reading or writing courses or those which lead to English qualifications.

  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2022, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£18,525), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
