Course Content

Applying to become a permanent resident or citizen of the UK is an important decision and commitment. You will be agreeing to accept the responsibilities which go with permanent residence and to respect the laws, values and traditions of the UK.

The Life in the UK test is part of demonstrating that you are ready to become a citizen of the UK. The test is designed to assess the applicant's knowledge of life in the United Kingdom and to introduce key features of life in the UK, It will also enhance student’s confidence in social situations with friends and local people.

This course will support students in achieving a pass in the Life in the UK test. The course will cover the following areas:
• The Values and Principles of the UK
• What is the UK
• A Long and Illustrious History
• A Modern, Thriving Society
• The UK Government, the Law and Your Role
This course is delivered for 14 hours in 7 weekly sessions. At the end, you will have the confidence for achieving a pass in the Life in the UK test.


This course is for anyone aged 19 or over.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.
You will need to commit to attending sessions regularly and completing some aspect of self-study


You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please also have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work. You may wish to use a memory stick.

This course is delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Zoom, email and our online learning platform, Moodle. You will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other like-minded people across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session along with instructions and online demonstrations.


This course is not formally assessed although you will be given verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course.


You will receive a certificate of completion following full attendance.


You will be given the opportunity to discuss progression to longer creative writing courses or those which lead to English qualifications.

  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2022).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual income is below £18,525.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2022, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£18,525), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
