Course Content

This is a 2 week non-accredited course for those wishing to progress onto our Accounts courses but would like to refresh their basic maths skills and who do not have or would like a refresher on the basics of using Microsoft Excel.
This course covers the following maths skills:
• How to calculate decimals, fractions and percentages
• How to round numbers to a set number of decimal places
• How to calculate different types of averages - mean, range, mode and median
• How to compare data over time and through ratios

And the following Excel skills:
• Creating, renaming and deleting a new Excel worksheet.
• Inserting & resizing of columns and rows in Excel.
• Using Excel to calulate and complete basic sums, rounding and averages.
• Using Excel to create different graphs including bar, column and pie charts



To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2022 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential.



You will need access to a laptop or computer, Microsoft Office & email.
This course will be delivered online using Teams. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you via Teams/email, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions. You will be given tasks to complete at each session and online demonstrations. You will also need a pen, paper & calculator.



Verbal and/or written feedback will be provided throughout this course.


You will achieve an understanding of the basics in Excel and a refresh in your maths skills, in order to support your Accounting studies.

  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
