Course Content

The course will provide an accredited qualification for those who are interested in working in an office environment or those looking for a qualification.

By the end of the course students will be able to:
• understand the responsibilities of the employee and employer.
• Understand how to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
• Understand the key features of an organisation within different business sectors
• Understand how sales and purchases support a business.
• Understand how to perform simple business calculations
• Understand how to use Microsoft Excel to present numerical data.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2022 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential. You must have completed the Introduction to Business Skills course.


You will need access to a laptop or computer with a camera and microphone, Microsoft Office, calculator & email.

This course will be delivered online using Teams. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you via Teams/email, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to group discussions. You may be given tasks to complete at each session and online demonstrations. You will also need a pen, paper & calculator.

Practice questions and assessments are completed at home and in class. The AAT Level 1 Award in Business Skills has one assessment that is taken either at our Ripon or Scarborough assessment centre.

On passing an online AAT assessment you will gain the AAT Level 1 Award in Business Skills

Skillsfirst Level 1 Award in Computerised Payroll for Business (Sage).
AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping
AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.
Skillsfirst Level 2 Certificate in Computerised Accounting for Business (Sage).
Skillsfirst Level 2 Certificate in Computerised Payroll for Business (Sage).

  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
