Course Content
This course is suitable for those who are new to an office environment, going self-employed or looking to retrain for an accounting/bookkeeping role and have completed the Introduction to Payroll course.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Use Sage to set up company details
• Entering employee records
• Calculating Gross Pay
• Processing weekly and monthly payrolls
• Running all the reports required including payslips

This course is delivered using the Sage Qualifications Portal allowing for the course to be completed at a time to suit you.



To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2023 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
Have completed our mandatory Introduction to Payroll Course. You should be working at Level 2 in maths and English.


You will need access to a laptop or computer. A tablet is not suitable. The course will be delivered online via the Sage Portal with ongoing teacher support and feedback. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you via Teams/email. You will be given tasks to complete and upload onto the portal each week.


The Skillsfirst Award in Computerised Payroll for Business - This qualification consists of two units, the final unit is assessed on a specified Monday, at our exam centre in Ripon.


Upon successful completion of a Sage assessment, completed at an assessment centre, you will achieve the Skillsfirst Level 1 Award in Computerised Payroll for Business


On successful completion of this course you can progress to further Skillsfirst courses - Level 2 Payroll, Level 1 Computerised Accounts, Level 2 Computerised Accounts or Level 3 Computerised Accounts or to an AAT course - AAT Level 1 Access Award in Bookkeeping, AAT Level 1 Access Award in Accounting Software or AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. Those wishing to move onto Level 2, must have a Level 1 literacy & numeracy qualification & preferably be working towards Level 2.

  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
