Course Content

The course will provide the third stage of a hands-on introduction for those who are new to using a computer or need to refresh their skills accessing the Internet, sending emails and basic word processing.
The course will help you to:
• use a range of word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet tools to carry out tasks
• manage emails
• create a file management structure so files are organised and easy to locate
• use recognised sites such as .GOV for form completion and uploads
• further recognise common computer terminology
• further improve computer safety and security
• develop skills for learning online
During the course, you will work on documents and activities set by your teacher in a socially distanced computer room. Further details of the Covid compliant access and required actions to ensure everyone’s safety, will be sent to you prior to the course start.


To be eligible for a free funded course you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2023 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live, and we will check that at the enrolment stage; we may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
It is suitable for those who are new to using IT and have completed the Next steps with computers course or those who need a refresher.



You may wish to bring a notepad and pen for taking notes and a folder to store notes and handouts.


Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.


You will receive an ALSS certificate of achievement on successful completion of this course.


Your teacher will discuss progression options, and these will include Digital Functional Skills, Cyber Security and other digital courses.


You may like to bring your own refreshments for consumption away from the computers.

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
