Before applying to this course, please make sure to attend the Introduction to Level 1 award in Cybersecurity course.

This course is for you if you want to learn about cybercrime and the risks and effects it has on people and organisations. It will provide you with an introduction to cybersecurity and will enable you to progress to further training and related employment.
The course will help you to:
• Understand how cybercrime can affect individuals and organisations.
• Learn about common forms of cybercrime including: phishing, identity theft, hacking, email and internet fraud, theft of financial or card payment data, ransomware, denial of service attacks and cyberespionage.
• Find out about protective methods to maintain cybersecurity including: using passwords, installing anti-virus software, using firewalls and taking backups.
• Learn about cybersecurity testing, including setting up user access controls.
• Understand the legislation and codes of conduct related to cybersecurity.
During the course you will be given helpful step-by-step guidance from our specialist teacher.



You need to have a basic understanding of how to use a Word document, how to save files, and how to send or upload files.
To be eligible for a free funded course you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2023 and not already have a qualification in Digital Functional Skills. Further eligibility may be linked to where you live, and we will check that at the enrolment stage; we may contact you for further information or refer you to an alternative provision.

This course is online. You will need to have access to a personal computer or laptop, a working camera and microphone, access to the Internet and an email account to make the most of the online sessions. If you are keen to take notes, please have a notepad, pen or pencil to hand.


Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

You will receive a Level 1 Award in Cybersecurity certificate


Your teacher will discuss progression options with you, and these may include the Digital functional skills qualifications, Level 2 Award in Digital and IT skills or any other courses we have on offer.

  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
