Course Content

This qualification provides you with an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part-time support staff may fulfil including administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2023 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at the enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision. The qualification is aimed at a range of learners, including young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or for whom English is an additional language, who are thinking of working in a school or college setting.


Notepad, pen or pencil and a folder to keep your work in. You will need access to a PC or laptop for the electronic portfolio.


All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board.


You will gain the Level 2 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.

The award shares mandatory units with the level 2 Certificate in supporting teaching and learning qualifications, providing a direct progression route.

  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2023).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £20,319.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
