Would you like to develop your language skills to prepare or support you to work in the Adult Health and Social care sector?

Our courses will help you to understand the Yorkshire terms and phrases that you may come across and will support you to build the language skills needed to communicate with service users and staff.
This course will provide an opportunity to develop your speaking and listening skills, with a focus on the language used in Health and Social care settings.
During the course you will:
• Learn Yorkshire terms and phrases for parts of the body
• Explore popular idioms
• Discover alternative terms for pain and comfort
Look at weights and measures for meals, medicines, healthy diets, hydration

This course is delivered for up to 12.5 hours in weekly sessions


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.23 whose first language is not English.

You will need to provide ID (such as a passport), a National Insurance number and we will need to ask you about your residency in the UK.

The course is aimed at those who are interested or already working in the Adult Health and Social Care Sector.

You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.

No previous experience is needed but you will need to be committed to attend every session.

You may want to bring along a notepad and pen.

Your teacher will assess your level of skill and give you verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

An attendance certificate for completion of the course

Further courses such as ‘Stepping into Health and Social Care’ will provide you with the language and vocabulary needed to complete the ‘Introduction to Health and Social Care’ This can lead to a recognised qualification in Health and Social care. You may also like to attend our ESOL courses in Speaking and Listening, reading and writing to further develop your skills.

  • We can offer financial support relating to childcare costs, travel costs, course fees, books etc. (T&C apply).
  • You can pay for your course in instalments (over £100). Please ask for details.
  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £25,000.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£25,000), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
