Course Content

The course will provide the second stage of a hands-on introduction for those who are new to using a computer, accessing the internet, sending emails and basic word processing.

The course will help you to:

Word Processing and Document Creation

Spreadsheet basics

Introduction to online services

increase recognition of common computer terminology

further improve computer safety and security

internet safety and troubleshooting

During the course, you will work on documents and activities set by your teacher.



To be eligible for a free funded course you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2023 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live, and we will check that at the enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
There are no IT entry requirements; this course is suitable for those who are new to using IT.


You may wish to bring a notepad and pen for taking notes and a folder to store notes and handouts.


Your teacher will assess your knowledge at the start of the course and your individual learning will be tailored accordingly. Observation of your progress throughout the various tasks will be used to assess your skills. Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.


You will receive an ALSS certificate of achievement on successful completion of this course.

Your teacher will discuss progression options, and these will include; Next Steps with Computers, Move on with computers, Digital Functional Skills, Cyber Security or other digital courses.


You may like to bring your own refreshments for consumption away from the computers.

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
