Do you need a bit of extra help with your reading, writing or speaking and listening skills but would like a qualification? Do you want a Functional Skills English qualification that can open the door to a range of work and further education opportunities?
Our Step into Functional Skills English courses for beginners teach you all the skills needed to achieve.
By the end of the course students will be able to:
• Demonstrate confidence in discussing topical issues.

• Demonstrate improved reading and writing skills and feel confident with spelling and grammar.

• Achieve a Functional Skills English qualification at a suitable level

You will be invited to attend for up to 54 hours, but your teacher will guide you to achieve in a timescale that is right for you.
We have a range of ways to support you to achieve.


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.24

You will need to provide ID (such as a passport or BNO visa) a National Insurance number and we will need to ask you about your residency in the UK.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential if you plan to study online.

We will ask you to undertake an initial assessment to ensure that work to an appropriate level

You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.



For classroom provision, please have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work.


You will complete assessments and activities throughout the course to measure your learning. Your teacher will give you verbal and written feedback.

You can discuss qualification choices with your teacher. If you don’t like exams, we can help you to build up a portfolio of work which will help you to gain you a recognised qualification.


A City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualification at an appropriate level.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


Other courses related to personal or professional development. This could be the next level of English, maths, IT courses or vocational courses.

  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
