Course Content

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide you with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.
It’s aimed at individuals who are working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

To be eligible for a free funded course you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice. Further eligibility may be linked to where you live, and we will check that at enrolment stage; we may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

You must attend an Introduction to Working with Children course before applying for this course.

This qualification is aimed at learners working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.
You will need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, you will need to be working or be on a practical placement during the taught programme of study in a learning environment for a minimum of 100 hours.

You will require an email account and basic IT skills. You may wish to bring a pen and paper to the sessions for note taking.

This qualification is internally assessed where you will also be observed by your teacher while you are on your practical placement.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.

Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


Once successfully completed you could progress to employment within an educational setting or progress further with your qualifications to obtain an NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
