Are you someone who wants to learn more about how maths skills are developed in Key stage 1? Do you want to support your child through the use of number stories to develop their maths skills?
During the course you will:
• Learn about the Early Years Foundation Stage and Year 1 National curriculum
• Develop skills in the use of number stories to underpin your childs understanding of mathematics
• Learn tips and techniques to better support your child


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice. Further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check this at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential for online classes.
You will need to commit to attending sessions weekly.

You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet. Please also have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work.
This course is delivered online. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams, email and our online learning platform. You will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other like-minded people across the County. You will be given tasks to complete at each session along with instructions and online demonstrations.


There is no formal assessment but you will be given the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the teacher.

You can expect to finish the course with improved understanding of your child’s maths learning: reasoning and fluency; where to find resources to help online learning; bar modelling and part whole methods; using what we know to find what we don’t know; conceptualising learning; adaptive teaching in lessons and the reasoning behind the CPA approach – Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract maths.
Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills and communication skills are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


You will be given the opportunity to discuss progression to other courses or those which could lead to Maths qualifications.

  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
