Learning in the local community has changed the lives of many adults across North Yorkshire and you could be one of them!

Research shows that learning throughout adulthood and into later life encourages important social interaction, gives a sense of hope and purpose and helps cope with stress, all of which has a positive impact on maintaining and improving our mental health and wellbeing.

This course will help you to delve into the fantastic story of Dracula, looking at the plot, characters and setting. You will gain insight into the author and discover why he wrote this particular gothic tale. To support your knowledge, you will receive a free paperback copy of the book to read alongside the sessions.
This course is delivered over 3 weeks, but you will also be invited to join an additional online question and answer session with Dacre Stoker, the international best-selling co-author.
Dacre Stoker is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker and the international best-selling co-author of Dracula the Un-Dead (2009), and Dracul (2018). Dacre is also the co-editor of The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker: The Dublin Years (2012). Dacre has consulted and appeared in recent film documentaries about vampires in literature and popular culture. The Real Vampire Files (2010 History Channel), The Tillinghast Nightmare, (2014 Historical Haunts), Secrets of the Dead (2015 PBS), Mysteries at the Museum, (2017 Travel Channel) Legend Hunter (2019 Travel Channel) American Vampires (2022 Fox Nation).
He currently hosts tours to Dublin Ireland, Whitby England, and Cruden Bay Scotland, to visit places where Bram Stoker lived, was educated, worked, researched, and wrote Dracula. He also leads groups to Transylvania to explore both the life and times of the historic Vlad Dracula III and also the locations where Bram Stoker set his famous novel.


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.24
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential if you plan to study online.
You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.

You may like to bring along a notebook and pen to create reference notes. All other resources will be provided.
For online study, your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations

If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.


Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


You may wish to join other interest-based courses, such as Creative Writing, Myths and legends look into other great writers’ work like Shakespeare’s Heroes and Villains. You may also like to enrol on an accredited course in English at your individual level.
