Course Content

This programme is an ideal progression from the Get started with Excel course. This is designed to give an overview of Microsoft Excel for learners who wish to develop these basic skills. There is a strong emphasis on improving your employability skills; by completing this course, you will be able to work more efficiently in your job, at home and with IT in general. It follows a structured syllabus working through a range of topics to cover specific knowledge areas and skills.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• Use formatting and page layout tools

• Develop formulae and a range of built-in functions

• Manipulate data using a variety of techniques
You will work through a variety of exercises and project tasks to suit your learning needs and will work individually, or in groups led by a specialist teacher.
Transferable skills that you will cover in these sessions include; organisation, decision-making, overcoming obstacles, commitment, self-motivation, confidence, problem solving, listening.


To be eligible for a free funded course you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live, and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
It is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of ICT and have completed the Get started with Excel course.



You will need to have regular access to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 personal computer with Microsoft Office installed (2016 or newer), a working camera and microphone, access to the Internet and an email account to make the most of the online sessions. If you are keen to take notes, please have a notepad, pen or pencil to hand.


Your teacher will assess your knowledge at the start of the course and your individual learning will be tailored accordingly. Observation of your progress throughout the various tasks will be used to assess your skills.


Following the course, you will be able to save and print a certificate of completion. 

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills and budgeting are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


You can progress to similar IT courses relating to other Microsoft Office applications or onto the Digital Functional Skills qualification. Your teacher will advise you of the suitability and availability of these.
