Course Content

This course uses Sage Cloud Payroll accounting software to calculate wages & produce wageslips & a range of required documentation.
This is an 8-week accredited distance learning course for those who wish to gain a Sage Payroll qualification at a time that suits them.

The course will help you to:
Use manual procedures to:
• Calculate basic pay for different payroll periods
• Calculate overtime payable from given information
• Implement permanent changes to rates of pay from given organisational information
• Understand what constitutes basic pay for different payroll periods
• Know the difference between statutory and voluntary deductions
• Understand the principles of the PAYE system
• Understand the principles of the National Insurance system
• Understand the procedures for completing starters and leavers information
• Understand the internal procedures for finalising the payroll
• Understand the HMRC reporting requirements

Using Sage Payroll to;
• Set up a computerised payroll system
• Set up employee records and payroll data in a computerised payroll system
• Enter details of gross pay into the computerised payroll system
• Process the payroll
• Back up and/or restore payroll data
• Understand statutory requirements for submitting information to HMRC



To be eligible for a free funded course you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
Basic IT skills are essential. You should be able to access the internet, download, open and save files, and upload files.
You should be working at level 1 in maths, English and ICT. You will also need to have completed the mandatory 2 weeks Introduction to Payroll level 1 course.


You will need a computer or laptop with internet and email. A smartphone is not suitable. You will also need a pen, paper and calculator.


The Skillsfirst Award in Computerised Payroll for Business - This qualification consists of two units, the final unit is assessed on specified Monday at our exam centre in Ripon.


You will achieve an understanding of payroll calculations and Sage Payroll software.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.
