Course Content

Applying to become a permanent resident or citizen of the UK is an important decision and commitment. You will be agreeing to accept the responsibilities which go with permanent residence and to respect the laws, values and traditions of the UK.

The Life in the UK test is part of demonstrating that you are ready to become a citizen of the UK. The test is designed to assess the applicant's knowledge of life in the United Kingdom and to introduce key features of life in the UK, It will also enhance student’s confidence in social situations with friends and local people.

This course will support students in achieving a pass in the Life in the UK test. The course will cover the following areas:
• The Values and Principles of the UK
• What is the UK
• A Long and Illustrious History
• A Modern, Thriving Society
• The UK Government, the Law and Your Role
This course is delivered for 16 hours in 8 weekly sessions. At the end, you will have the confidence for achieving a pass in the Life in the UK test.
Fees may apply but 92% of learners do not need to pay


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.24 whose first language is not English.
You will need a good level of English skills and will preferably have completed entry 3 level qualifications in English or ESOL
You will need to provide ID (such as a passport or BNO visa) a National Insurance number and we will need to ask you about your residency in the UK.

We will ask you to provide evidence of qualifications you have achieved. If you cannot provide the evidence, we will ask you to undertake an initial assessment to ensure that you are at the right level.
You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.



You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet if you plan to study online. Please be aware that smart phone access is not advised. You will need access to the internet and an email account. For online study, your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations

If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.

Your teacher will assess your level of skill and give you verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.

Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


Other courses related to personal or professional development. This could be an exam based Speaking and Listening course, an ESOL course in writing or reading, an English or maths qualification, IT, employability or a course leading to work.

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
