Course Content

This qualification provides you with an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part-time support staff may fulfil including administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as of 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at the enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

The qualification is aimed at a range of learners, including young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or for whom English is an additional language, who are thinking of working in a school or college setting.

Learners must complete the introduction to working in schools course before starting this qualification.

Notepad, pen or pencil and a folder to keep your work in. You will need access to a PC or laptop for the electronic portfolio.

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board.


You will gain the Level 2 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.

Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


The award shares mandatory units with the level 2 Certificate in supporting teaching and learning qualifications, providing a direct progression route.

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
