Course Content

The Make your weekly shop go further cooking course will support you to create nutritious, healthy food for you and your family. It is a hands-on cooking experience with learners carrying out a range of cookery skills, guided by our qualified cookery teacher.
You will be involved in preparing, cooking, and clearing up whilst learning basic cookery techniques and food safety. You can take home your completed recipes to enjoy. The recipes will use affordable everyday ingredients. Batch cooking is a fantastic way of producing healthy food for your family while reducing waste and cost.
During the course you will:
• Discuss recipes and alternatives to make meals go further and appeal to all the family
• Develop skills in basic food preparation techniques, reducing waste and encouraging the whole family to eat healthily
• Explore savvy shopping with seasonal product shopping and reduced priced goods
Plan meals to ensure your weekly shop is providing healthy food for your family without any waste.

By combining simple ingredients with store cupboard staples, you will broaden your culinary adventures!
Dietary requirements will be taken into consideration so please advise prior to the course if you have any dietary needs including allergies.


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.


To take part in this free course you will need to enrol before the session either online or face to face with a member of our team.
You will be provided with an apron and all the ingredients for the session.
At the end of the session, you can either eat the food you have prepared, or take it home, along with recipes for you to make in the future. Please bring a food container with you to take your prepared food home.
A notepad and pen/ pencil may be helpful to take notes during the session


Your teacher will give verbal feedback throughout the course.


A good understanding of managing your weekly food budget and the essential skills to prepare healthy and affordable meals.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


On completion of this course, your teacher will tell you about other courses available.
You may wish to progress to the level 2 Food Safety qualification.

  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
