Build your skills is part three of a suite of three courses designed to support learners to understand their strengths and identify areas for development.
Our Build your skills is a course is designed to help you improve your chances of employability through building your practical skills and thinking skills. It is delivered through a series of short introductions to the following topics:
Thinking skills, Planning and time management, self-assessment, target setting and personal development planning.
You will also be introduced to a range of basic office skills including MS Word, MS Spreadsheets, Teams meetings and Powerpoint presentations.


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact your for further information or refer you to alternative provision. No previous experience is required.


A pen and paper would be beneficial. Basic level of maths and English.


You will take part in self-assessment activities.
Your teacher will give verbal feedback throughout the course.


You will receive an ALSS certificate of achievement on successful completion of this course.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.

Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.

Other personal and professional development courses will be available to you including a range of accredited courses such as Level 1 Employability, Level 1 Customer Service, Basic Accounting, Level 1 Award in preparing to work in schools, Level 2 Team Leading, Level 1 & Level 2 Maths or English. Your teacher will discuss these with you.

Helping you financially

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,000
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
