If you would like to make your own vibrant, floral or floaty summer dress, top, skirt or other clothing item then this is the course for you.
This course will give you the skills and confidence in reading a commercial dressmaking pattern to create a summer garment of choice. You will learn key techniques, construction processes, and terminology, whilst exploring fabric types and finishes to make your garment.
This course is suitable for those who have a basic understanding of the sewing machine and would like to learn how to construct a basic garment efficiently from a commercial pattern. Alternatively, for those with some experience in garment making and would love to extend these skills further by developing a more complex design and range of techniques.

To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

This course will be delivered face to face. A basic range of practical equipment will be provided such as sewing machinery, tools and equipment. However, you may want to provide your own threads, fabric quarters or scraps to practice. You will also need to purchase a commercial dressmaking pattern and fabric for your garment. If you are at the beginning of your dressmaking journey please select a basic level pattern to start with. This is shown on the front of the pattern packet.

Your tutor will give you verbal and written feedback on your progress throughout the course, with hints and tips on how to improve your technique and continue to develop your skills.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.
