The course intends to provide learners with a practical and budget-conscious approach to meal preparation. This course aims to empower families with the knowledge and skills to prepare delicious, nutritious, and budget-friendly meals that save time and contribute to financial well-being.

The primary goal of this course is to introduce learners to the art of cooking when using portable appliances such as slow cookers and air fryers and demonstrate how they can be a valuable tool in managing the cost of living. It focuses on preparing a wide variety of dishes that cater to family tastes while keeping budget constraints in mind.

By combining simple ingredients with store cupboard staples, you will broaden your culinary adventures!

Dietary requirements will be taken into consideration so please advise prior to the course if you have any dietary needs including allergies.


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2024 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.

To take part in this free course you will need to enrol before the session either online or face to face with a member of our team.

You will be provided with an apron and all the ingredients for the session.

At the end of the session, you can either eat the food you have prepared, or take it home, along with recipes for you to make in the future. Please bring a food container with you to take your prepared food home.

A notepad and pen/ pencil may be helpful to take notes during the session


Your teacher will give verbal feedback throughout the course.


An understanding of managing your weekly food budget and the essential skills to prepare healthy and affordable meals.


On completion of this course, your teacher will tell you about other courses available.
You may wish to progress to the level 2 Food Safety qualification.

  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
