This course in Advanced English skills will help you find your critical voice.
We’ll be looking at how to analyse texts at a deeper level, using short stories, poems and
autobiographical extracts to discuss and respond to.
This course is useful to those moving into Further Education or those simply wanting to keep on learning English beyond Level 2.

Academic writing is different to everyday styles and being asked to write evaluations of writing as critical analysis can be a daunting prospect. Learn how to interpret questions and how to plan, structure and write academic assignments. This course is designed to help you develop the skills you need to write effectively for academic purposes.

The Academic Writing course is a supportive and practical way of building your confidence to produce a formal written assignment.The course will teach you the do's and don'ts of academic writing skills as well as teach invaluable language and communication skills.

During the course, you will explore the different stages and elements of a successful academic writing assignment:
• planning structure and style
• editing and reviewing accuracy and SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar)
• submitting and responding to feedback.

This course is delivered in 2.5-hour sessions over 6 weeks.


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.24

No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential if you plan to study online.

You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.

You may like to have a notebook and pen to create reference notes. All other resources will be provided.
This course is delivered online. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations
Please be aware that smart phone access is not advised.

If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.

Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.
