Do you use reading, writing and speaking and listening skills regularly?

Are you confident with grammar, comprehension and punctuation but need a qualification?

Do you want a Functional Skills English qualification that can open the door to a range of work and further education opportunities?

This is a 5 week introduction leading onto your additional 13 week accredited English course.

Our Step into Functional Skills English introduction course teaches you all the skills needed to progress to your assessed level.

By the end of the course you will be able to join an accredited class in which you will:

• Demonstrate confidence in presenting and discussing topical issues.

• Demonstrate the sound reading and writing skills needed to achieve a qualification.

• Achieve a Functional Skills English qualification at a suitable level

Our experienced and knowledgeable teachers will help you to choose the level most appropriate for you.

You will be invited to attend our introductory course for up to 15 hours and then your teacher will guide you to achieve a qualification in a timescale that is right for you (up to 39 hours)

This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.25

You will need to provide ID (such as a passport or BNO visa) a National Insurance number and we will need to ask you about your residency in the UK.
No previous experience is required. Basic IT skills are essential if you plan to study online.

We will ask you to undertake an initial assessment to ensure that work to an appropriate level

You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.


Classroom
For classroom provision, please have a notepad, pen or pencil and a small folder for handouts and your work.

Online Offer
You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet if you plan to study online. Please be aware that smart phone access is not advised. You will need access to the internet and an email account. For online study, you will attend an online class with a teacher who will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations
If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.


You will complete assessments and activities throughout the course to measure your learning. Your teacher will give you verbal and written feedback

You will be required to complete one reading, one writing examination and three speaking and listening assessments at the end of the course.


A City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualification at an appropriate level.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.
Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


Other courses related to personal or professional development. This could be the next level of English, maths, IT courses or vocational courses.

Helping you financially

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2025)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,750
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
