Course Content

This course is an introduction to the qualification shown below:
These introduction sessions will lead you into the level 2 Ascentis certificate course which will run for 15 weeks. The introduction and the accredited course will both be delivered online on a Monday and Thursday evening and will give you the opportunity to see if this is the right qualification for you.
This initial course consists of 2 introductory sessions so that you can discuss the course content, self-study and portfolio building. You and your teacher can then discuss progression into the accredited course at level 2.
Qualification Overview
This qualification enables learners who are speakers of other languages to develop the language and skills necessary to volunteer, work or go on and train as community interpreters at Level 3 and higher levels.
Aims
The aims of the qualification are to enable learners:
• To develop public service awareness and knowledge
• To develop language skills in preparation for training as community interpreters
• To develop listening and assertiveness skills in preparation for further community interpreting study and work
• To develop volunteering experience in the community

This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.25 who is fluent in more than one language. You should have achieved a minimum of ESOL or Functional Skills at level 1 or we can assess your suitability for the qualification.
• You will need to provide ID (such as a share code) a National Insurance number and we will need to ask you about your residency in the UK.

You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.
You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet to study online. Please be aware that smart phone access is not advised. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations

If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.

For online study, your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations


Your teacher will give verbal and written feedback throughout the course.
You will be required to build a portfolio of evidence by the end of the course.

Time Management

If you know how to find accurate and reliable sources of information to use in projects and reports, you’ll quickly become an irreplaceable team member.

Networking
Networking skills developed through study group discussions can help to make a workplace meeting run smoothly, build client relationships and improve colleague and office relations.

Presenting Ideas
In most jobs, presentations or reports are required. If you’re already a pro at putting ideas into an easily digestible format (like an assignment) then you’re already half-way there

Reasoning
One skill you’ll naturally develop whatever subject you’re studying is reasoning. Whether you’re evaluating a resource or researching a topic, the ability to weigh up the pros and cons of a project are invaluable.

Decision Making
You might not realise it, but every assignment is the product of hundreds of small decisions, e.g. your choice of words, argument, resources etc. It’s easy to apply this skill to workplace decisions.

Persuasion
You don’t have to pursue a career in sales or business to need persuasion skills. As a learner you’ll naturally develop them as you build your case in essays and discussions.

Overcoming Obstacles
There’s not a learner out there that hasn’t encountered an obstacle, be it a bad grade or confusion around a subject. The skills you develop as you tackle this.



Other courses related to personal or professional development. This could be a Certificate in Preparing for a Community Interpreting role at Level 2, an English, maths or digital skills qualification.
