ESOL courses can open the door to a range of work and education opportunities along with building confidence in everyday life and work.
The Speak Up course is designed for English language learners to improve their speaking and listening skills in a relaxed environment. These classes focus on practical communication, such as social interactions, giving opinions, making small talk and helping to build confidence and fluency.
This course will support you to build your confidence in speaking and listening. You will be introduced to a range of vocabulary, spoken grammar and pronunciation through interesting and dynamic discussions within the group.
During the course you will:
• Focus on speaking and listening: The primary goal is to practice and improve real-world communication skills.
• Increase your confidence: The informal and supportive atmosphere helps learners feel more comfortable speaking English.
• Learn vocabulary and phrases: You will learn new words and phrases to express yourself more effectively.
Fees may apply but 92% of learners do not need to pay


This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.25 whose first language is not English.

You will need to provide a share code and we may ask you about your residency in the UK.
You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.



You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet if you plan to study online. Please be aware that smart phone access is not advised. You will need access to the internet and an email account. For online study, your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations

If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.



Your teacher will give verbal feedback throughout the course.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.

Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


You may wat to progress to the next level of conversation courses such as Beyond Basics – Fluent Conversation or other courses related to the English Language. This could be an exam based Speaking and Listening course, an ESOL course in writing or reading, an English qualification, IT, employability or a course leading to work.

Helping you financially

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2025)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,750
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
