Course Content

ESOL courses can open the door to a range of work and education opportunities along with building confidence in everyday life and work.
What a Performance! is a course designed for English language learners to improve their speaking and listening skills in a relaxed environment. The course is delivered through evening classes, accessed online.
Through a range of engaging activities, you will develop your confidence and skills in speaking aloud. We will explore short drama scripts, stories and poems through speaking and listening exercises to develop fluency, improve pronunciation and expand vocabulary. You will participate in group discussions on cultural themes, develop your conversation skills, and improve intonation and grammar by reading scripts and other written material.
The course will help build your confidence and improve your understanding of the English language. The aims of the course are:
• To speak with greater accuracy and confidence
• Practice speaking and listening through group discussions
• Explore cultural themes through drama scripts, stories and poems
• Build advanced vocabulary and grammar
• Improve pronunciation and fluency

Fees may apply but 92% of learners do not need to pay

This course is for anyone who was aged 19 or over on 31.8.25 whose first language is not English.

You will need to provide a share code and we may ask you about your residency in the UK.
You will need to commit to regular attendance and to complete some study in your own time.



You will need access to a Laptop or Tablet if you plan to study online. Please be aware that smart phone access is not advised. You will need access to the internet and an email account. For online study, your teacher will contact you on a weekly basis through Teams and email. You will be given tasks to complete at each session, instructions and online demonstrations

If you don’t have access to a computer, we may still be able to support you. Ask for an appointment with a member of staff to discuss our other options.






Your teacher will give verbal feedback throughout the course.

Throughout your time learning with us, you will also have developed a whole range of skills that can be transferred from your course to a working environment, your home life or your own personal development.

Skills such as time management, organisation, research skills, networking and presenting ideas are all part of your learning journey along with decision making, problem solving and overcoming obstacles. All these skills will help you to become a confident, self-motivated person and will assist you on your chosen pathway.


You may want to progress to the next level of conversation courses such as Beyond Basics – Fluent Conversation or other courses related to the English Language. This could be an exam based Speaking and Listening course, an ESOL course in writing or reading, an English qualification, IT, employability or a course leading to work.

  • English, maths and computing courses (up to level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2025)
  • Reduced course fees for non-qualification courses if you receive a qualifying benefit.
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your income is below £25,750
  • Discretionary Learner Support funding relating to cover fees, books etc (qualifications only) T&C apply.
  • Pay for your course in instalments via direct debit (over £100), ask for details.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans for Level 3 courses and above – no repayments until you earn over £25,000
