Course Content

This is a non-accredited course to identify ways to be more successful in job searching, applications and interviews.
By the end of the course, learners will have:
• Understood the importance of matching their own transferrable skills to the skills detailed within a job description
• Produced or updated their own CV.
• Identified different types of interviews and the information required in order to plan for them.
• Researched an area of interest and identify relevant qualifications which will improve their chances on gaining employment in this area.
• Created an individual action plan to improve their chances on gaining employment


This course is for anyone aged 19 or over. No prior knowledge, skills or qualifications are needed, just a willingness to learn.
Basic IT skills are essential.


Notepad, pen and a folder to keep your work in.
Access to a laptop/tablet and have an Email account to access online delivery via Teams or attend in person at Castle House, Elders Street, Scarborough.


There will be group discussion, some small group work, one-to-one tuition and completion of worksheets.
Your teacher will give verbal feedback throughout the course.

You will receive an ALSS certificate of achievement on successful completion of this course.

There are a range of qualifications which are provided by our service to suit your needs which will be discussed within the course.


This course is being taught online and in a classroom at Castle House in Scarborough at the same time. The number of available places in Scarborough is limited and will be allocated based on the date of application. You must commit to attending either online or at the venue, a mixture of both will not be allowed.

  • You can pay for your course in instalments (over £100). Please ask for details.
  • English, maths including GCSEs and computing courses (up to Level 1) are FREE subject to eligibility (adult learners aged 19+ at 31st August 2024).
  • Qualification courses at Level 2 or below are FREE if your individual employed/self employed income is below £25,000.
  • If you have not yet achieved a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, you could learn for FREE.
  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£25,000), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
