Course Content

This course will provide a Skillsfirst accredited qualification for those who have completed Level 1 payroll.

By the end of the course using manual procedures students will :
• Know the amendments to make to a leaver’s final pay
• Understand statutory requirements when processing a leaver
• Know what payroll information is to be prepared and kept by law
• Understand data protection legislation in relation to payroll
• Know the general principles of employment rights legislation
• Be able to calculate basic, overtime & additional payments from given information
• Be able to implement relevant statutory additions to pay when entitlement has been determined
• Understand the need and procedures to make temporary and permanent changes to rates of pay
• Understand potential health and safety and security risks
• Maintain the security of data within a computerised environment
• Understand SMP, SSP, SAP, SPP & how to calculate them

Using Sage Payroll & excel, by the end of the course students will be able to;
• Process information on starters, leavers and changes to current employees
• Process payroll accurately on a pay period basis
• Back up and update systems when required
• Use a spreadsheet to enter, edit and organise numerical and other data
• Select and use appropriate formulas and data analysis tools to meet requirements
• Select and use tools and techniques to present and format spreadsheet information


To be eligible for funding for courses you must be over 19 years of age as at 31st August 2023 and not be an apprentice, further eligibility may be linked to where you live and we will check that at enrolment stage and may contact you for further information or refer you to alternative provision.
You should be working at Level 1 in maths, English and ICT. You will also need to have completed the Payroll Level 1 course.

You will need access to a laptop or computer & email.
This course will be distance learning. You will need access to the internet and an email account. Your teacher will contact you via Teams/email. You will be given tasks to complete at each week and assessment to complete online. You will also need a pen, paper & calculator.


Practice questions and assessments are completed at home and uploaded onto the online portal.
This qualification consists of three units, the final unit is assessed on specified Monday at our exam centre in Ripon.

Upon successful completion of three assessments you will achieve the Skillsfirst Level 2 Certificate in Computerised Payroll for Business.



Progression Possible courses after completing this Level 2 qualification are:
AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping
AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.
Skillsfirst Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting for Business (Sage)

  • Don’t worry if you have already gained a Level 3 qualification, but want to change your career path and try something new – you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you start to pay back when you earn over £27,295.
  • From April 2023, some Level 3 courses will be available for FREE to adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319), even if you already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.
